Helping Animals On Giving Hearts Day

Next Thursday will be Giving Hearts Day, a 24-hour online fundraising event where donations of $10 or more to participating charities will be matched by sponsors. Among the local nonprofit organizations involved this year are Homeward Animal Shelter, CATS Cradle Shelter, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue, and Adopt-a-Pet.

Hosted by the Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation, Giving Hearts Day started back in 2008, when it raised $325,000. In 2011, it topped one-million dollars, and just last year it broke records by raising 49% more funds than the year before.

For local animal welfare organizations, proceeds will go toward sponsoring adoption fees and providing food, veterinary care, and other accommodations for the resident cats and dogs. Homeward Animal Shelter, for example, receives 77% of its funding from donations, while Adopt-a-Pet relies 100% on the generosity of supporters.

Donations must be made at impactgiveitback.org, where a list of participating charities can be found.
